Contractors to burn logging debris on Mount Sentinel; ‘substantial’ smoke possible

If you see smoke on Mount Sentinel over the next week, it’s likely from city contractors burning logging debris.

Missoula’s Parks and Recreation Department said a contractor has an active permit to burn brush and small trees on the southwest face of the mountain between May 17 and May 22.

The burns could begin Thursday and continue through the weekend, depending on weather conditions.

City officials said residents could see “substantial smoke” from the valley floor, but there is no need to call 911 or Missoula Fire. Emergency services are aware of the plans.

The burning is part of a joint project by the city and University of Montana to thin about 70 acres of forest land on top of Mount Sentinel, funded by a $67,000 grant given to the city by the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation.
