Firefighters knocked down a fast-moving wildfire that sparked off Duncan Drive in the upper Rattlesnake neighborhood shortly before 9 p.m. Monday.

No lightning has been reported in the area for more than a month.

Witnesses in the area said the fire started off Duncan Drive near the PEAS Farm on a grassy slope. The fire quickly spread uphill and entered a stand of trees.

“It burned in a ring and they're running around the edge of it,” a witness said. “There's a couple of trees burned. There's police and fire trucks on the scene.”

The witness, who asked not to be identified, said both city and wildland fire crews were on scene at 9:30 p.m.

“They're knocking it down pretty good,” the person said. “They're getting it under control pretty fast.”

By 10 p.m., the fire appeared to be under control, although emergency vehicles were still working on the hillside and residents from throughout the Rattlesnake Valley were standing outside watching, hoping for the best.
