When you’re a street musician busking in the subway of New York City, you hope to get cash to pay some bills. Maybe you dream of getting noticed and playing on a stage.
Perhaps you get lucky and a random passerby records a video of you playing, and he or she posts it to Youtube.
When you’re a fan of music living in Montana, and you’re turned on to an amazing Youtube video of three New Yorkers playing in the subway, your first thought may be to travel to NYC. Then a year or so later, you hear that NYC is coming to you.
Leo Pellegrino, Matt Muirhead, and David Parks started busking in the NYC subways in 2013. The random video was posted in 2014 and the rest is history. The three, known as Too Many Zooz, launched a career playing on stages across the country and Europe.
As Muirhead told the Top Hat crowd last night, “We began this 7 years ago not thinking it would lead to this, we are blessed because of you.”
The band has a sound they define as ‘brass house’. It’s a mix of jazz, Afro-Cuban rhythms, funk, EDM and house music. What results is a sound that no one can resist.
Your entire body has to move to the rhythm. That’s exactly what was experienced last night.
