Film fest announces new locations after theater collapse

The collapse of a neighborhood theater under the weight of snow just weeks before the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival was to begin left several screenings in doubt.

But following an outpouring of support, the schedule has been revised and the screenings moved from The Silver theater to four other venues around town.

On Monday, the annual film festival released its revised schedule, turning to The Wilma, Missoula Children's Theater, The Roxy and the Public House as alternate venues.

“Following the collapse, all events and film screenings planned for The Silver were relocated to new venues and will move ahead as scheduled,” said Rachel Gregg, the festival's executive director. “The festival received an outpouring of support following the collapse of The Silver, with multiple offers for alternative spaces all over town, and volunteer assistance making last minute changes.”

The Silver, located at 2023 S. Higgins, collapsed under the weight of heavy snow and ice on Feb. 4. The building was empty at the time and no one was hurt.

“It was a beautiful space, especially following the renovations their team had worked hard on for over a year,” said Gregg. “We're incredibly grateful for our venue partners in Missoula who responded quickly and generously to absorb the schedule planned for The Silver.”

Now in its 14th year, the annual documentary film festival will take place Feb. 17-26, presenting over 200 of the best nonfiction films.

The screenings referenced in the program to play at The Silver will officially screen at the following venues on the following days:

Saturday, 2/18 - The Wilma

Sunday 2/19 - Missoula Children’s Theater

Monday 2/20 - Missoula Children’s Theater

Tuesday 2/21 - The Wilma

Wednesday 2/22 - The Wilma

Thursday 2/23 - Public House

Friday 2/24 – The Roxy Theater

Saturday 2/25 - Public House

Sunday 2/26 - Missoula Children’s Theater
